Join us for the celebrations.
With the advent of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, awareness of the multicultural groups living in the United States grew gradually. Hispanic Heritage Week was established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 and was later expanded to a 30-day celebration by President Ronald Reagan, beginning on September 15 and ending on October 15. Nowadays, Hispanic Heritage Month was established to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic-Americans – specifically, people with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Hispanic Americans have been integral to the prosperity of the U.S. Their contributions to the nation are immeasurable, and they embody the best of American values. The Hispanic-American community has left an indelible mark on the U.S. culture and economy.
The month is commemorated in a variety of ways. Since this month marks celebrations of various events important to Hispanic-Americans, various concerts, parades, food parades, art exhibitions, and educational programs highlighting memorable historical events and cherishing the evolution of cultural understanding are organized nationwide.
If you are of Hispanic origin or want to show your loved ones that you celebrate their culture, there are various ways to share understanding and appreciation during this time of the year.

Alma and How She Got Her Name, $13.59
Alma and How She Got Her Name is a 2018 children’s book by Juana Martinez-Neal. The story follows Alma, whose full name is Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela. She thinks that she has too many names and so she asks her dad about them. He explains the various people she was named to honor. As Alma's namesakes emerge from the shadows when they are introduced, they and their distinguishing items (books, plants, paintbrushes, etc.) are highlighted in a pale, gray-blue. This is the ideal gift for children to introduce them to Hispanic culture and inspire them to be proud of their heritage or learn more about other cultures.
“Absolutely one of the best picture books of the year. An instant classic! From the illustrations to the flowing story of Alma's ancestry. So many possibilities for elementary classrooms!!!
